Newcastle

At about 30 kilometres from Hexham, the great city of Newcastle spreads on both banks of the river Tyne.

Tyneside, so quiet on a Saturday morning.
This area has recently been renovated and is teeming with life in the evening.

It counts more than one million inhabitants and it was thriving at the end of the 19th century. Indeed, at that time, the town had very active ship-building yards, armement industries and it controlled the great mining wealth of Northumberland. This to the point that the phrase "to bring coal to Newcastle" now means to do something completely useless like throwing water in the river.

The town centre has inherited from these prosperous times some very handsome buildings and a superb avenue going down to the river. You can also visit in Newcastle, St Nicholas, the beautiful cathedral.

Today, Newcastle has mostly become a tradingtown. There are many luxurious shops and department stores in the town centre and the Metro Center, the biggest shopping center in Europe was built some time ago in the outskirts of the city.

Finally, it is interesting to note that Newcastle is deeply attached to its traditions among which, its special accent called "Geordie".
